SSL certificates have been around the website arena for a while. We’ve all heard of them, right? However, as of recent these certificates have become more important to the end user than ever before. In the past, the only companies that purchased the SSL certificates, were the ones that were selling on-line or using e-commerce.
First, we need to understand what an SSL is and how it works. SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. It is a protocol which creates a secure connection between a client and the server over which to send information. SSL works by using a cryptographic system that uses two keys to encrypt data. In essence, keeping your your end user’s information safe when they enter information into a website. For example; filling out a form on a website. With an SSL certificate, it offers less of a chance that your information will be confiscated.
The number one reason, that you should purchase an SSL certificate, is simply that security. It seems like today, where ever we go, information is being handed out, and to the wrong sources. Credit cards are being hacked. In the past three months, we’ve been sent three different credit cards because of credit card information being compromised.
The internet can be our friend, or it can be our foe. We are constantly researching information across the web. At times, we are unsure as to whether or not a site is safe. Do we trust the site? Sometimes we may get a warning that the site is not a trusted source. Trust is the second reason your site needs a SSL certificate. You can tell what a secure site looks like by the https in the url (domain name) Secured URL addresses will also begin with HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure). People feel reassured when a site is a trusted site. Sometimes, individuals won’t give their information to a site they feel is not safe.
According to Google it’s important that your site be a secure site, authenticity is what they call it, the third reason for having a secure site. Believe it or not, people make replicas of sites (make them look like a true site) to divert traffic to their site and steal information. I’ve seen this myself. Fairly recently, I received an email from what looked like my paypal account. When I clicked on it, it brought me to a site that looked like paypal, and wanted my username and password. Being familiar with Paypal, I knew that the site was not a true Paypal site, and did not enter the information. So, look for the HTTPS, or green security in the URL.
Finally, the fourth reason that your site needs a SSL certificate, is to help with SEO, search engine optimization. SEO has been becoming increasingly popular, and who doesn’t want their website to be found. In August of 2014, Google stated that they were starting to give HTTPS sites a boost in the search engine rankings. So, remember if Google says the safety of a website is important, then by golly it is important, and you should be on board with Google.
So, it’s not a question of having an SSL certificate in today’s world of websites. The answer is simple, yes, an SSL certificate is necessary to the success of your website. If you are unsure of whether or not you have one, take a look in the url, and look for green https.
