In this day and age, we are all so very busy. In fact, as a business owner, at times you are less focused on your business and more focused on getting the work done for your clients. A lot of you have a family, laundry, medical situations, life challenges, volunteer groups – so much happening in our lives, so little time to get everything done. How many of you are nodding your heads right now? I know I am. However, from experience, I am here to tell you that you must take time out for your business to plan, and stay focused for 2018. Making a plate of spaghetti and throwing it at the wall to see what sticks, is not ideal business planning.
Here are THREE TIPS to help stay focused on your business success in 2018.
- Set Annual GOALS for your business, and share them with your employees. It’s so important that everyone in your company know what the goals are for the year, so they can stay focused on the end. Everyone needs to be rowing in the same direction. Knowing that your goal is to increase “New Clients” by 10% each month, is a specific goal that everyone can understand and help achieve. P.S. Writing these goals down is ultimately important to the success of achieving your goals. Dr. Gail Matthews, a psychology professor at the Dominican University in California studied the science of goals and dreams. She found that you become 42% more likely to achieve your goals and dreams by simply writing them down on a regular basis.
- Set ROCKS each quarter. Once you have set your annual goals, you need to create stepping stones along the way. We call these “ROCKS”. Each quarter we set ROCKS to help us achieve our goals for the year. Think about what you can do this quarter that will help you get to your FINAL GOAL. Breaking it down into ROCKS, is like taking baby steps, and it feels easier to achieve.
- Keep Score, and stay accountable. It’s important to measure your goals, so each week we have a scorecard that helps us understand how we are doing. We keep our “pulse” on the company each week. As an example; one of our goals this quarter was to post consistently on social media. Our goal specifically was to post a minimum of 10 posts. If we met this, we received 10 points. If we don’t meet our goals we receive less points. We keep the scorecard in google docs, and each month create a new google sheet. I’m being very transparent because we want you to have the tools to succeed. Below is an example of our Google scorecard without our actual numbers reported on the sheet. It even helps us monitor cash flow and other areas in the company. Notice every one of our areas, an individual or team is in charge of putting the information on the google docs. It makes them accountable for their actions each week.
In less than one week from today, we will have our 4th Quarter Meeting. This meeting is offsite to help us get out of our element. At our meeting, we will be doing a SWAT Analysis of how our 2017 business year was. We will talk about what worked, what didn’t, what we can do better and of course what our goals/rocks for 2018 will be. Our quarterly meetings are a wonderful opportunity to get back on track, to rejuvenate us. A great time for brainstorming, and getting creative. I’m truly looking forward to this meeting and what it holds for all of us, and all of you, our potential clients and current clients.
