If you are looking for a simple and easy to comprehend business book, “Who Moved My Cheese?” by Spencer Johnson, M.D. is a great read. Whether you are struggling with sales or struggling with your weight, this book tells a story to help you understand what might be happening. Sometimes you get so caught up in the day to day activity, that you are unable to see what is happening to your company as a whole. Similar to the phrase “love is blind” when you are dating someone. Sometimes you just don’t see that person’s flaws, until it’s too late. It is the same in business. Sometimes we need to get away from the business or ask someone else what they think is happening to truly understand our own business.

“Who Moved My Cheese?” talks about 4 different characters that we can all relate to. These characters got so used to going to the same room for cheese each day, that they didn’t notice the cheese supply was dwindling a little bit each day. They were comfortable, too comfortable. One day everything changed. The cheese was gone, and they had decisions to make. Two made changes quickly to try and find the cheese again. The other two characters took their time thinking the cheese would return. And they were starving. In business, if we don’t pay attention to the little things that are happening, one day we might not have a business.

The book is a great book for businesses and shows the reader how businesses can be lost. You need to be able to pivot in business. One of the writings on the wall in the book stated: “If you do not change, you could become extinct.” Another saying “Smell the cheese often so that you know when the cheese is getting old.” Basically, you need to be monitoring your business frequently, and you need to make changes as necessary, and sometimes quickly in order to survive.

Reading this book came at a great time to me. We’ve been dealing with an up and down year, and stagnant sales. Although we monitor our sales each week and have a pulse on the company at all times, the book helped me to learn that sometimes we need to act a little quicker. And it helped me to realize that we need to move in a different direction altogether. That is precisely what we are currently doing. Moving in a totally different direction, and hopefully, we will find some NEW cheese, Better CHEESE. Time will tell, and I will not be afraid to make decisions after reading this book. I’m also going to let go of the old cheese, for some tastier cheese and maybe even a little bit of wine to go with it. Are you with me?
